What Is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists Coverage?

In nearly every state, including Ohio, drivers are required to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage also known as UM/UIM. In Ohio, drivers are required to carry at least $25,000 per person/$50,000 for all persons injured in an accident. UM/UIM acts as a safety net to protect you in the event the person who injured you doesn’t have enough coverage or doesn’t have coverage at all. Just as before, do not opt for the minimum coverage. Get as much coverage as you can afford. Again, we recommend at least $250,000 per person/$500,000 for all persons injured in a single accident. If you can afford more, go for it. Generally speaking, your UM/UIM coverage has to match up with your liability coverage.

One of the worst parts of our job is sitting across the table from our client who was severely injured and unable to work and telling them the person who injured them doesn’t have enough coverage to pay for their damages - or worse yet, doesn’t have insurance at all. It happens all too often and most of the time, our clients don’t even know how much UM/UIM coverage they have until it’s too late. If you’re reading this, look at your policy and if you have the minimum coverage, add more coverage to your plan now.

UM/UIM coverage is one of the most important things to consider when purchasing an insurance policy. And if you’re involved in an accident, contact our experienced personal injury team to get the answers and the representation you deserve.
