What are 12-Point Suspensions?

In Ohio, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) enforces a point system to promote safe driving and penalize traffic violations. A critical aspect of this system is the 12-point suspension, a measure taken against drivers who accumulate 12 or more points for traffic offenses within a two-year period.

The Ohio Point System: Basics

The Ohio BMV assigns points to a driver's license for various traffic violations. For instance, speeding might earn you 2-4 points, while more severe offenses like OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) can result in 6 points. Accumulating 12 points within a 24-month period triggers an automatic suspension of driving privileges.

12-Point Suspension: The Process

Accumulation of Points

Drivers receive notifications as they accumulate points. If the total reaches 6 or more, the BMV sends a warning letter.

Suspension Notification

Upon reaching 12 points, the BMV issues a suspension notice. The suspension becomes effective 20 days after the issuance of the notice, providing time for the driver to arrange for alternatives to personal driving.

Duration and Conditions

The 12-point suspension lasts for six months. During this period, the driver is prohibited from operating any motor vehicle. If caught driving the operator of the vehicle faces a mandatory 3 days in jail.

Reinstatement Procedures

Completing the Suspension

After the suspension period, drivers must complete certain steps for reinstatement, including:

  • Serving the full suspension period.

  • Completing a remedial driving course.

  • Providing proof of financial responsibility, typically through SR-22 insurance.

  • Paying a reinstatement fee.

Points Reduction and Avoiding Suspension

Points Reduction

By completing a remedial driving course you can receive a 2-point credit, helping avoid future suspensions. However, this reduction is only available once every three years and must be taken before you reach 12-points.
